I knocked on Qnique's door and asked if she had any food to spare. Without hesitating, she went inside and came back with taco shells and meat. She handed it to me like it was nothing.
It wasn't nothing. It was her family's dinner. The only food she and her children had left. Then she apologized because she had no water to offer me — their water had been shut off, and she'd been using cups just to get her kids through the day.
I gave her $500 to thank her, and she broke down crying. That's when the rest of her story came out. Qnique is a single mom who was evicted and had to move out that same day. She didn't know where her family would sleep that night. She was heading to a shelter, hoping there'd be room.
